Job Overview
The position will involve leadership, oversight and coordination of the church’s ministry to children and young people. This is a senior leadership position that will shape our teaching, discipleship and mission within the church and local community. The church is passionate about ministry to children and young people and sees this appointment as highly strategic in the outworking of our developing church vision. The Youth & Children’s Minister will work as part of a team alongside a full-time Pioneer Community Worker, a volunteer Schools Coordinator and an excellent team of experienced youth and children’s volunteers.
Responsibilities:
1. YOUTH DISCIPLESHIP
To coordinate and build a programme for the young people in the church and community which will cater for their spiritual and social needs, helping them to grow in confidence in their faith and in their awareness and understanding of God. This could be done in a number of ways so there is some flexibility here to discern the best way forward with the Lead Minister. We currently have the following expectations for the new post holder to:
- Coordinate and help lead (with volunteers) the weekly Sunday morning Challengers youth group (school years 7-11) except when it is the All Age service
- Lead and develop the youth discipleship through a midweek small group
- Assist with leading the Friday night community youth group (currently fortnightly term-time)
- Encourage those over 16 to meet together for fellowship, teaching and support in order to continue to develop their faith. This could take the form of a small group for the 16 to 25 age range.
2. CHILDREN’S DISCIPLESHIP
- Oversee and help lead (with volunteers) the weekly Sunday morning children’s groups except when it is the All Age service. These currently include Junior Disciples (school years 3 to 6), the Followers group for those in years 1 & 2, and the crèche.
- Lead and develop the children’s discipleship, possibly through a midweek small group
- Oversee and develop the vision for the children’s ministry at the Good Shepherd seeking opportunities for discipleship both on Sundays and the rest of the week
- Develop a strategy for supporting parents in the development of their children’s faith
- Assist the volunteer Schools’ Coordinator with some school assemblies, lessons and after-school clubs
3. WORSHIP
- Help lead the monthly All-Age Sunday Service encouraging intergenerational relationships within the church community
- Help lead the monthly Messy Church and develop an ongoing plan of discipleship for this community
4. GENERAL TASKS
- Organise appropriate youth and children’s social events, camps and trips.
- Coordinate the recruitment, training and support of volunteer leaders and helpers
- Build on partnerships with neighbouring parishes, local community groups and schemes and share in joint activities from time to time
- Offer pastoral support and mentoring for young people and signpost them to professional services if needed
- Keep the whole church informed about the vision for ministry among the younger generations and listen to the views of the congregation
- Ensure the safeguarding of children, young people and vulnerable adults is a top priority and best practice is maintained
- Evaluate and monitor the work, identifying and initiating any changes required
- Ensure adequate time is given to administration and communication
- Work to agreed Church policies and procedures. Other duties and responsibilities in line with the role deemed reasonable by the BOT
Qualifications and Skills:
- Demonstrated experience in pastoral care, counselling, or social work.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Empathy and a non-judgmental approach to diverse challenges.
- Organizational and problem-solving abilities.
Salary & Working Hours:
- Guaranteed salary for Religious Worker: £26,500pa
- Basic Working Hours is 35 hours per week
